Three families
How the finishes differ
The family a finish belongs to tells you more about how it will age than the colour does.

Plated finishes
An electroplated metal layer — the hardest and most corrosion-resistant of the three families. The safe specification for exposed entrances and for humid or coastal sites.

Coated finishes
A pigmented coating over a plated base. Matte black is the most requested finish we make. Excellent indoors and on sheltered entrances; specify a plated finish instead within a few kilometres of salt water.

Living brass finishes
Polished brass, antique brass and antique copper are meant to change with handling and time. On a heritage or boutique project that is the point — tell the client in advance and it reads as a feature.

Three rules that prevent most finish complaints
- Match the family, not just the name — two suppliers’ “matte black” will differ. Order every black item on a door from one process.
- Ask about the coastal case. Near salt water, specify a plated finish or agree a refresh cycle in writing.
- Get physical samples before the client signs off the schedule.
Care
Keeping the finish
A soft dry cloth, and nothing else. Solvents, abrasives and acidic bathroom cleaners strip coated finishes and void the finish cover faster than any amount of normal use.
